The First Light Gisborne Hash weekend

The First Light Gisborne Hash weekend on the 13-15 November 2020 was a very memorable time for the 60 or so attendees.  Held at the Churchhill campground opposite the beach it was a template for the future.  It was BYO drinks and BYO food ( apart from Saturday night dinner) and hosted by Blue Virgin and A Blue Shin, a recent Mount Hash couple who have moved to Gisborne. 

Fantastic sunny warm weather and the campground had heaps of room for the tents and mobile homes.  Some bunkroom accommodation too. 

Kickoff was 2pm on the Friday with the programme starting off with a wander down to local music venue – Smash Palace Hotel -   for drinks and snacks, while the evenings band warmed up.  Back to the campground and the Hash Band of Xerox, Perky, Crabtree and Feefifofum were soon belting out the tunes.  Party on through the night with a handful making it so see the sun rise first in the world. 

Saturday morning was recovery time with many visiting local markets and cafes, others going for walks and swims.  Run was announced as starting at 1pm with every one being divided into 5 teams – one runners, 3 walkers and one slow walkers.  Captains appointed with instructions given. 

The trail was very scenic with much along the waterfront and there to a local hill with great views.  Team leaders were tasked with taking team photo’s at strategic points such as statues and then sending to the Blue Virgin who would then send the instructions for the next part of trail.  2 drinks stops and loads of fun and heaps of photo’s.  The runners trail took around 4 hours and covered over 12km. 

Circle back at camp was kicked off by NZGM Shunter followed by fines from the floor and then the Hares took over with fines of their own.  Lots of songs and hilarity.  

Hares set up dinner after this and the usual hash entertainment into the evening, once again led by the Hash Band.
